Here is an example of what the children learnt about Maori culture and what it means to belong. The children were asked to talk about how a Marae helps a community come together. We talked about what happens in a Marae as part of our topic on People and Places this term.

W.A.L.T:describe an exciting event
Guess what everyone! I have some brilliant news I saw people doing dangerous like boys flipping to the music. It is funky music. The boy is incredible. I loved it when the boy did the splits.

Hello, my name is Amanda. Do you want to hear something that will blow your mind away? Well, hear this! Ok I’ll get on with it. This man was skating on the snow with his dressing gown, a book, and a cup of hot chocolate. It was mindblowing. I liked it, it was just, haaah, yea. Oh, and there was another cool man that did side flips up the stairs. And then of course there was another man who was so smart he could jump over a bubble thing and do cartwheels and run back and land in the bubble.

Room 16's thoughts on voting for/against a new flag.....
Those who are in favour of keeping the old flag:
" I would like the old flag because John Key needs to spend a lot of money for nothing...because the old flag was perfect'. Jordana
"I would like the old flag because the soldiers died for the flag. I like the colours of the old flag." Aaliyah
"I would like the old flag because it represents the British Royal Family. The people who made the flag spent days and days making it." Shyla
"I would choose the old flag because the soldiers who died in the ward also agreed with the Union Jack." Hayley
"I would like to choose the old flag because it cost a lot of money to do the referendum. Some people do not have much money and it is not fair to spend the money on choosing a flag. The money should be spent on something useful like if he has that much money he can give some {away}! Junxuan
Those who are in favour of keeping the new flag:
"I choose the new flag because it has lighter blue and it has multi colours." Ollie
" I choose the new flag because you {John Key} needs to spend a lot of money for it." Hunter W
"I choose the new flag because John Key spent a lot of money {already}." Sophie
"It will be best if we have the new flag because it represents our sports teams like the All Blacks. It will be best if we have our own flag, but it might change and make things different." Eva
"I would like the new flag because John Key spent $26 million on it." Kiranjot
"I would like the new flag because it has the All Black symbols on it. It's cool and makes us free." Cameron
"I would choose the new flag because the silver fern is a good symbol and John Key spent thousands and hundred of money for the new flag and it will be a waste of money if we didn't pick it." Harsharn
"I will choose the new flag because I want this country to be a free land to represent the Maori and John Key spend $26million to look for a flag." Evie
"I would like to choose the new flag because John Key spent $30 million." Hunter A
"I would like the new flag because I want New Zealand to be it's own boss." Aseem
